Introduction

The Cochin Hill Produce Merchant’s Association is situated in Jew Town, Cochin – 2.

It  is the oldest and most illustrious association in cochin. The prime activities and endeavour of the association is to support and promote those engaged in the Hill Produce Trade in general and of the members of the Association comprising of traders and exporters doing spices business since more than 60 to 70 years. It has as its members many a stalwarts in the business field currently trading in spices and spice products.

We consider all aspects affecting the Spices Trade, and disseminate all relevant information and practice in the trade among our members. We have been instrumental in determining and declaring market rates for spot/ready merchandise. Furthermore to define and codify the customs and functioning of spices trade and to regulate and initiate general measures affecting the trade.
“Hill Produce” includes spices products like Cardamom, Pepper, Ginger, Turmeric,  Nutmeg, Mace, Galangal root and such other commodities as may be decided upon to be considered as Hill Produce.

The business of the association is managed by a committee of seven members of whom one is elected as the President, one the Vice-President, one the Secretary.

Objectives

      • To Support, protect and promote the character and status and watch over the interest of those engaged in the Hill Produce trade generally and of the members of the Association in particular and bring about union and co-operation among them to their common advantage.

To Promote the consideration and discussion of all questions affecting the Hill Produce Trade, to diffuse among its members information on all matters affecting the trade in Hill Produce, to bring about honourable practices to settle disputed points of usage and practice in the trade and to decide all questions of mercantile usage and or courtesy between or amongst its members.

      • To define and codify the customs and usages of such trade in Hill Produce and to initiate and watch over general measures affecting such trade and to procure changes of law or practice in such trade.

To approach the lesgislature or Government to introduce steps for promotion of trade in Hill Produce and to oppose measures which may be detrimental to the Hill Produce Trade.

To arrange and promote the adoption of equitable forms of contracts and other documents in the Hill Produce Trade and to encourage the settlement of disputes as among its members by arbitration and subject to the provisions of the Arbitration Act, X of 1940 and to Act as or nominate arbitrators or umpires on such terms and in such cases as may seem expedient.

Committee

The business of the association is managed by a committee of seven members of whom one is elected as the President, one the Vice-President, one the Secretary. Term of the Committee elected at the Annual General Meeting is for two years.
